How to draw anything (in 1 step)

By Meowza Katz on August 22, 2008 | 175 comments

Almost all of us have our own weaknesses when it comes to illustrating particular subjects. I, personally, can not draw a horse to save my life. I can't imagine a situation where the difference between my life and death depends on my ability to draw a horse, but still, it's haunted me for years.

I've talked about my lack of ability to draw horses to many of my artist friends and peers. To my surprise, many of them recounted me their own secret, shameful inabilities to draw all sorts of subjects including hands, proportions, machinery etc...

I then realized I was not alone in this. We all have our Achille's heel, and I wanted to help all of us.

So a while back, I asked users here to email me illustrations they just could not finish due to their own personal weaknesses, or to send me any illustrations for general critique on areas that could use improvement. So that maybe I could find a common thread in all of our inabilities.

And it dawned on me. All of our problems could be solved with one simple technique:

Practice? No.

How To Draw Anything in One Step

You may be asking, "How could you possibly learn how to draw anything and everything in just one step? Are you a moron?" And if you are, there is no need for childish name-calling. Let's be civilized adults here.

Follow along as I teach you how to draw everything, in this tutorial.

Step 1. Draw a dog covering the thing you can't draw.

Don't believe this works?

Remember how I asked users to send me their problem illustrations? Well, let's test it out firsthand, shall we?

Brandon Kobayashi from Burnaby, Canada sent me this email and his illustration of a woman sitting on a tree stump:

"I often find myself having difficulties drawing human feet. Do you have any tips on how to improve my ability (or lack thereof) in that department?"

Sure there is, Brandon. Just follow my tutorial and you will be set.

Step 1. When finding you can't draw feet, conveniently enough, a dog decided to rest at the woman's feet the day the portrait was painted.

Melanie Goode of Auburn, WA, wrote me asking for help on this particular image:

"I don't seem to have problems drawing bodies, but I am mystified when it comes to getting the proportions of a human face just right."

Well, Melanie, I see you're off to the conventional start by adding in the guidelines for the facial features. Most art instructors teach this very method. But I find it's a lot easier if you follow my tutorial.

Step 1. Pretend a dog ran across the woman's face the day she decided to lay in the grass.

At this point you're probably wondering, "Wow, this is great! But will this technique work in different illustrative styles, as well?" Why, thank you for the compliment! And yes, it will work in all illustration styles.

For example, Ken Tanaka from San Diego, CA sent me a cartoon image of a solider he wanted depicting an M-16 machine gun.

Step 1. I have never personally been interested in drawing weaponry, but even with my lack of experience I was able to use my own tutorial to complete the image of a soldier holding an M-16 machine gun. (Who just happened to be walking along the direct path of a leaping golden retriever.)

And people of all ages can do it, too.

Wendy Lee of (address undisclosed) sent me a drawing by her 6 year old son and told me how he loved to draw dinosaurs and wants to learn to draw them more realistically.

Well, first off, dinosaurs do not talk, smile, nor has there ever been (in any official documented report) a dinosaur that existed labeled a Kevinsaurus.

So how will my system work on a 6 year olds drawing? Very well, actually!

Step 1. As we can add multiple dogs to cover the child's numerous, major technical flaws.

So, there you have it: The be-all, end-all of illustration tutorials.

With my method, I guarantee you'll find yourself with a newfound ability to draw anything and everything you can imagine on this big, round Earth. Including the Earth.

Q: "What if my weakness IS drawing dogs?"
A: It's time to change hobbies.

You should of drawn the army guy trying to shoot the dog off like it was a gun. Brilliant, btw.

Posted by Robert on 2008-08-22 18:43:13

Sorry, but I need to say something.
first of all, I can't draw dogs very well so this tutorial will not help me in the least, however, you did a great job on these images, but it does not do an iota of good if the point of the image was to actually portray the said "flaw" in which case, you just have to learn to draw a face, Earth, Dinosaur, Feet and M-16.
which brings me to my next point, the M-16A1(2) is the United states Military Mainstay Combat RIFLE, the M-16 is NEVER nor has ever been a "gun".

Posted by KC on 2008-08-22 18:55:23

Pretty sweet tutorial. I can't draw dog paws, so should I draw a dog over the dog paws? And then draw a dog over the paws of the second dog and create an infinite spiral sort of thing?

Robert: Why don't you pour yourself a nice big glass of chill out juice. How are you missing the fact that this isn't real tutorial?

Posted by Blaze on 2008-08-22 18:56:21

I expected a helpful tutorial. When you said to draw a dog, I thought that meant a dog would help you with proportions or something. When I got to the dog running in front of the girls face, I figured out this whole post was a joke :D

Posted by Mike on 2008-08-22 23:15:59

I've used this method for years, and there is no situation where it doesn't work. I dare anyone to come up with a scenario where drawing a dog over a troublesome part doesn't take an image from "OMG BURN IT, BURN IT!" to "Ooh la la". If you look closely at some old master's painting you can see they used dogs too.

Posted by Karl Gruber on 2008-08-22 23:24:59

In the one with the soldier, you left the dog's shadow on what should've been the original. Otherwise, good post, once I got over the disappointment of it not being real.

Definition of "Gun" = a weapon that discharges a missile at high velocity (especially from a metal tube or barrel) Do M-16's not do this? (Oh...sorry, I meant the "M-16A1(2)"). (By the way, I vote "Asshat").

@Peter A rifle is a sub-category of Guns. Asshat.

How about putting a crate over the poorly drawn area. Anyone can draw a box! You could work the crate in by stenciling in something appropriate, such as ACME STUMP CUSHIONS

Hi. To a soldier, a "gun" is artillery, ships' guns, etc. really big stuff. Don't be too harsh, he volunteered to risk his life for our right to ridicule. To the rest of you, it's splitting hairs, and he needs to adapt to society. Or maybe cover bad parts of his drawing with guns. or carbines. meh. ...and for this tutorial, it's the best real-life-as-sarcasm I've seen in weeks. Brilliant! Truly a life-saving skill.

Posted by Loki Clock on 2008-08-23 18:28:28

Gun (n.) - any portable firearm, as a rifle, shotgun, or revolver. The very definition accounts for rifles. Yes, gun has specific meaning as cannonry, and often people think it implies a handgun, but that does not mean you can't refer to any gun as a gun. Instrument does not mean only a musical instrument just because you haven't heard anyone refer to other kinds of tools as instruments lately.

Does this technique work with other uses of the verb "to draw?" for instance, can hilarity be injected into a situation by pulling a dog from curtains? What about drawing a dog instead of conclusions? Science demands answers.

Posted by Anonymous on 2008-08-26 04:03:48

To Mazhar Aziz Siddiqui: Use a scanner. If you don't have a scanner, you absolutely have to buy one. Then, you could either try to learn to draw it like in the real paper picture or just use to paper picture in the computer form. You could also make a minor (or major) corrections to the picture or color it or whatever you wish to do with it. Anonymous.

Nice trick! Once, some classmates and me had to draw a advertisement in order to manifest how to publicity uses the women as an object just to promote something. So, we draw a girl holding the product very fine, but when we want to draw the face of the girl... ops! The solution: we just draw a big barcode over the girl's face, covering it at all. This gave to our work a deeper significance: the person is not important -- just the body, the flesh. And a barcode is easier to draw than a dog!

There are countless instances of popular usage running afoul of precise technical jargon, and countless people who love to talk about it. Certainly @robert (#14) could have written "rifle" a few times on sticky paper to hide the offensive words, but then he wouldn't have the opportunity to share what he knows and cares about (just like everybody else in this Web 2.0 world). And other people love to share their own criticism of language pedants, in a way that's no less tedious to a lot of readers either. (I don't mean to suggest that Robert is a language pedant, but he was portraying one in that post, possibly for satirical purposes.) Of course, people who didn't like to read about M16s (a specific, technical term) not being "guns" (a generic, popular characterization) have the option of putting a plastic sheet over their monitors (a la "Winky Dink") and drawing pictures of dogs to obscure the offending corrections. I could have done that with their posts too, but see above about Web 2.0.

Posted by Time Tracker on 2008-09-11 02:14:15

Ah, if we could only have a dog to cover up all the other miscues and didn't draws in life. Great article!

Posted by polkqasw on 2008-09-11 05:30:00

my question is: i can use cats instead of dogs? i think the image of Melanie Goode could be fantastic with a cat too. thanks.

Posted by ben on 2008-09-11 07:45:12

Nice concept, however I can draw dogs but have a problem drawing their paws. Could you suggest an easy to draw creature or object of a suitable size to cover a dog's paws??? Also, in the drawing of the "Kevinosaurus" I thought you identified and handled most of the original problems with Kevin's drawing but missed the fact that the dinosaur appears to have between five and eight legs, at least one too many from my limited knowledge on dinosaurs. I suggest solving this problem by drawing a dog to cover the legs and mask this error. Thanks for making me smile, ben

Just checking to see if I got the math problem right.

Posted by david on 2008-09-12 16:20:19

@ben just cover the dogs paws with dogs. eventually, you'll run out of paper.

Posted by Laura "Pistachio" Fitton on 2008-09-12 16:43:48

hahahahaha. isn't this like St. Exupery's Aviator - who finally drew the sheep inside a box to satisfy the The Little Prince?

Posted by Cath on 2008-09-12 22:07:14

My God, as an art tutor, you can be sure I will constantly be referring to this brilliant tutorial, for those who can't actually draw dogs, I will suggest they draw a pile of dog doo. (it's common and seems to be everywhere so won't seem out of place) Thank you, you are a genius Cheers Cathy Dee www.cathydee.com

Posted by Daniel Ted on 2008-09-12 23:24:07

If you can't draw it, cover it.

Posted by Hay on 2008-09-13 08:55:11

Brilliant. I can't believe i never thought of this trick before.

Posted by Miss U on 2008-09-13 14:06:18

OMG I literately felt over laughing. How cute. Good tutorial. Got anymore?

Posted by longe on 2008-09-13 18:42:11

If you can't draw a dog you should use the technique from this page, and cover that dog with a dog.

Posted by Tiara on 2008-09-13 23:00:16

Oh man!! you're hilarious lol...I'm so glad I read all of this :)

Posted by Kat Johnston on 2008-09-14 09:11:11

Great post! Incredibly humorous... but at the same time, uhhh, I use the technique a bit myself every now and then. Except when I do actually draw dogs, of course. So this is helpful!

Posted by Elin on 2008-09-14 17:08:16

Brilliant, man! It really works!! I just used it and it`s amazing! (but I drew a cat =P )

Posted by Basilio jose bernal junior on 2008-09-14 18:50:26

Everything in my life now i will draw DOGS.

Posted by Evangeline Than on 2008-09-14 22:55:29

Hmm, smells like a likely exhibition theme :) All my figures will now have dachshunds instead of hands.

Posted by Sam on 2008-09-15 13:20:05

meh, i cant draw dogs too well, plus it looks really akward in a lot of the images i make.

Posted by jfml on 2008-09-15 16:27:52

BEST tutorial EVER!

Thank you!

Meowza!!! YOU ARE A GENIUS :P!!! My smile started to get bigger, Bigger, and BIGGER until I blasted with laughter on the Earth's pic XD!!! Quite, useful!!! maaan, I haven't noticed that i ALWAYS use this way!! but instead of dogs, i draw shapeless gooey creatures that happen to be EVERYWHERE!!!... oh... in addition to my everly-black sun and the bunch of spermatozoids getting out of it and spreading to cover the whole image :S!!! and of course, not to forget, you have a perfect drawing style... regardless of the Horse part :p THIS, is just wonderful!!! All da best :) H.Q.

Good grief.... you sure drew me in [no pun intended] I was all set to put all my failed art on the right track. Lots of fun ,thanks for that though. I can draw a pretty good bat[ the flying kind not baseball ] so maybe I will turn all my art into Gothic masterpieces

Posted by Luke Nguyen on 2008-10-17 20:17:16

So brilliant !!! Thanks for the uncontrollable laugh :)

Posted by Jeba on 2008-10-22 09:15:08

This wonderful technique is so simple and yet so effective. Thank you so much. After years of studying around the world with professors of fine art, I declare they no nothing. You are truly the Guru of ART. Love you! lol

Posted by serjz on 2008-10-24 07:00:33

I really love to draw but I just can't understand why I can't come up with a figure I am thinking of. Sometimes my dog turn out to be a horse and human turns out to be a monster...sigh

Posted by inhumanviper on 2008-11-12 11:11:44

@Blah #100 LOL! touche. meowza, you rock! Ive been using "dogs" for years and no one suspects a thing...this also explains how things like that lame @$$ dog in superman were created? I am definitely linking this tut.

Posted by ????? on 2008-12-17 12:55:47

Posted by Lizzard on 2009-03-19 11:14:16

the world would be a better place if dinosaurs smiled and talked... and if dogs were jumping conveniently in front of hard-to-draw places :)

Posted by Kevin Carbonaro on 2009-05-23 12:16:46

Strangely enough, this 'tutorial' does help a little... if you're an artist but have difficulty with drawing something... use your creative mind and change it a little so that it becomes easier for you to draw what you want. The first pic as an example, just fired up my imagination. I can't draw cars... but what if the car crashed into a wall... my cars look like crahsed cars anyway so a wall in front of them, makes them look more realistic :) tks for the idea!!! LOL

Posted by Ant Exterminator on 2009-05-28 20:49:13

Posted by ilovedinosaurs7 on 2009-10-17 00:21:53

On the dino one, if I were you, I would draw a dog on the dino's tail because all sauropod dinos had a long tail, not the flimsy giraffe tail.

Posted by ilovedinosaurs7 on 2009-10-17 00:26:44

If all else fails, try drawing Velociraptors!

Posted by jlo on 2009-11-06 09:17:09
