Select & Transform w/ Falcon API

By Michael Galpert on August 14, 2009 | 2 comments

The entire team has been hard at work updating the entire Aviary suite.

Over the next couple of posts we'll try and highlight some of these updates:

First update of note is Aviary's Markup application, Falcon which now includes quick "select & transform" tools, allowing for simple selections of areas in screengrabs & image uploads.

You might have noticed the new features in the application already, for those of you who havent can find them in the last two icons in the application or via their respective keyboard shortcut keys.

Rectangle Selection [ Keyboard Shortcut = M ]

Lasso Selection [ Keyboard Shortcut= Q ]

Also of note in the Awesome Falcon News Department.
The Aviary API Documentation now includes Falcon, so all you developers out there go ahead and integrate away.

Scheduled maintenance tomorrow (July, 23rd) at 4am EDT

By Iz on July 22, 2009 | 3 comments

Just a heads up. There will be a maintenance window from 4am - 6am EDT early Thursday morning while we upgrade our servers. Aviary will be unavailable for part or all of that time.

We apologize for the inconvenience to anyone this affects and will make it up to you by eating a delicious double-fudge chocolate sundae. Yum.

What is 'The Frying Pan?'

By Avi Muchnick on July 10, 2009 | 125 comments

Aviary's top secret new app is temporarily code-named The Frying Pan.

Can you guess what it does?

10 lucky guesses will get 1 year of Aviary Pro, for free. If you already have it, you'll get the right to gift it to someone else. 1 win per person. :)

Here's who can win:

1) The first 5 people who guess right in the comments below this post or on Twitter.

2) Up to 5 people (chosen at random) who post entertaining (but wrong) answer in the comments below or on Twitter. :)

TWITTER INSTRUCTIONS

Please make sure to include the following hash tag #fryingpan (and we optionally recommend a link to this post: http://bit.ly/11MIdV)

Example Tweet
Click it to post to Twitter - and don't forget to fill in the blank with your answer!

I bet the new app from @Aviary is __________________ #Aviary #FryingPan http://bit.ly/11MIdV

Good luck!

Update: We changed the hashtag from #WhatIsTheFryingPan to #fryingpan since Twitter apparently can't index it correctly. Don't worry though, we'll track the old tag too.

Aviary & NoScript Firefox Addon users: Here's a quick bug fix

By Avi Muchnick on July 09, 2009 | 4 comments

We've had a few bug reports from people with both Aviary's Firefox Addon and the Noscript addon installed.

Namely, the two extensions seem to cancel each other out when they are both installed. Big problem. :)

Well, here's a quick experimental fix that we'd love your help testing if you do have both addons installed and experienced this problem:

http://web1.aviary.com/apps/webv2/aviary-0.8.7/aviary-0.8.7.xpi

Please note this is experimental. It doesn't need to be installed yet unless you have Noscript installed and couldn't get the Aviary Firefox Addon to work. If version 0.8.6 otherwise worked for you, then there's no need to update to this new version until we have fully tested it out and released it on Mozilla's addons site.

Here is a list of the changes in this particular version:

(1) Fixed conflict with NoScript add-on.

(2) Always show the "Host it at Aviary.com" button (prompt to login
if necessary).

(3) Fixed a problem in Firefox 3.5 that prevented images from being
saved correctly to Aviary.com when the "Allow Third Party Cookies"
Firefox option is not checked.

Please let us know if this works for you. Thanks in advance!

iDrive spammed my Gmail contacts

By Avi Muchnick on July 08, 2009 | 23 comments

This is really embarrassing and frustrating.

Last night I woke up to see a few dozen spam emails from a company called idrive addressed to different catchall emails that I use @aviary.com..

Everyone else who works at Aviary was reporting the same thing as well. And what's worse, some Aviary users whom I had corresponded with in the past got spam from idrive too and notified me about it. Even people who had deleted their Aviary accounts.

What happened next was solely my fault - not Aviary's - or rather the fault of an apparently very shady iphone contact synchronization service I use called iDrive.

Let me explain:

Directions to Translate Aviary

By Avi Muchnick on June 11, 2009 | 11 comments

Thanks for all the volunteers who offered to translate Aviary into different languages! Translating languages for different Aviary tools is easy. Just follow these steps:

DIRECTIONS

Step 1. Download a free application called Poedit and install it.

Step 2. Download the Aviary translation files (.po).

Step 3. Just unzip and open any .po file in Poedit, click on a row to translate the English terms and enter your translation at the bottom. You can translate as many rows as you like.

Step 4. When you are done, Save the .po file and simply email it back to support@aviary.com and we'll approve it and add it to the Aviary tool you translated (and send you a nice thank you gift).

Please include the following in your email to support@aviary.com:

* The name of the tool you translated
* The name of the language you translated
* Your Aviary username
* Your name and shipping address (we will not publish this anywhere).
* The saved .po file. :)

Thanks!
